4-Monitor Setup: 2x2 or Side by Side?

A 4-monitor setup gives you room for charts, code or camera feeds – without constantly switching between windows. Whether your four screens work best side by side or in a 2x2 grid mainly comes down to three things: the width of your desk, the size of your monitors and how often you'll have to look up.

In short

For most desks, 2x2 is the better choice.

In a 2x2 grid, the monitors are mounted in two rows of two. The setup needs only about half the width, and you don't have to turn your head as far to the side. In return, the top row sits above eye level – so it's best for content you only check now and then.

Four monitors side by side are mainly worth it if your desk is very wide and you need all the screens equally often and at eye level.

When are four monitors worth it?

Four screens really pay off when you need to keep track of a lot of information at once:

  • Trading: charts in several timeframes, order book, news and watchlist side by side.
  • Programming: code, preview, documentation and terminal without switching windows.
  • Monitoring and control rooms: camera feeds, dashboards and system status at a glance.
  • Photo and video editing: workspace, preview, tools and assets on separate screens.

If you mostly work with two or three programs, a smaller setup is often enough. Four monitors pay off if you would otherwise be constantly moving windows around or searching for them.

2x2 or side by side: the direct comparison

The biggest difference is the width. The graphic shows four 27-inch monitors to scale – with a 160 cm wide desk underneath.

Width and height by monitor size

Monitor size Four side by side 2x2 grid
24 inch approx. 2.2 m wide approx. 1.1 m wide · 62 cm high
27 inch approx. 2.4 m wide approx. 1.2 m wide · 69 cm high
32 inch approx. 2.9 m wide approx. 1.4 m wide · 82 cm high

Approximate values for 16:9 monitors with slim bezels. If you angle the outer monitors inwards, you need a little less width but more depth.

Four side by side

  • All screens at the same height – no looking up.
  • Needs a lot of width: around 2.4 m with 27-inch monitors.
  • The outer monitors are far off to the side, so you often turn your head and upper body.

Best for: very wide desks and content you use equally often.

2x2 grid

  • Half the width: around 1.2 m with 27-inch monitors.
  • Short eye movements, hardly any turning to the side.
  • The top row sits above eye level – ideal for content you only glance at briefly.

Best for: standard desks, trading, programming and monitoring.

How to set up a 2x2 grid ergonomically

For screen work, the German Social Accident Insurance recommends: place the monitor as low as possible, with the top line of text no higher than eye level, and keep a viewing distance of at least 50 cm (DGUV Information 115-401, in German). In a 2x2 grid, the top row inevitably sits higher. These five steps keep the setup comfortable all the same:

  1. Set the bottom row low: its lower edge sits just above the keyboard and desktop.
  2. Main work goes at the bottom: whatever you need all the time – your main chart or your code, for example – belongs in the bottom row.
  3. Tilt the top row towards you: angle the upper monitors forward so that you look at the screens as straight on as possible.
  4. Keep your distance: at least 50 cm, and rather more with 27 inches and above. With a little distance, you can take in both rows without moving your head much.
  5. Close the gaps: push the monitors close together so that windows and charts flow across without wide gaps.

Fine-tune instead of locking in place

You rarely find the right position at the first attempt. With spring-assisted arms, you can adjust the height and tilt of each monitor with one hand – even weeks later, when you notice the top row should sit a little lower.

This is especially handy at workstations shared by several people: everyone can set the monitors to suit their own seat height.

Which monitor size suits a 2x2 grid?

  • 24 inch: compact and the most comfortable ergonomically, because the top row doesn't reach as high. Good for dashboards and monitoring.
  • 27 inch: the most popular compromise for trading and programming. Around 1.2 m wide and 69 cm high in a 2x2 grid.
  • 32 inch: lots of screen space, but the grid ends up around 82 cm high. Allow for more viewing distance and tilt the top row noticeably.

Tip: Choose four identical monitors. Different sizes, bezels or colour settings make the grid look uneven, and the edges won't line up.

What to look for in a mount

1. Load capacity per arm and VESA size

For each monitor, check the weight without the stand and the VESA hole pattern on the back, usually 75 × 75 or 100 × 100 mm. With spring arms, the minimum load matters too: a monitor that is too light is just as hard to adjust as one that is too heavy.

Does your monitor fit?

Enter the brand and model. The Setup Finder shows you the VESA size, compatible mounts and any accessories you need.

You'll usually find the model name on the rating label on the back of the monitor.

2. A pole that's tall enough

For two stacked rows, the pole has to be tall enough so the top row doesn't hit the end of it. That's why it is extended to 90 cm on the 3IDEE ONE 2x2 sets.

3. A sturdy desktop and secure mounting

Four monitors plus the mount can easily weigh 20 to 30 kg, and it all hangs from a single point. Your desktop has to be sturdy enough for that. With glass tops, honeycomb-core panels or very thin material, check beforehand whether a clamp will hold. If you use a sit-stand desk, check the lifting capacity of the frame as well.

4. Sideways sliding for narrow gaps

Sliding head: the monitor glides sideways without you having to realign the arm.

Even when the arms are positioned correctly, there is often a gap left between the monitors. With heads that slide sideways, you can push the screens close together – in a 2x2 grid on the left and right of both rows.

This is particularly worthwhile when windows or charts span two monitors.

5. Cables and graphics card

Four monitors mean four video cables and four power cables. Plan their route along the pole and leave some slack at each arm for movement. Check beforehand whether your computer can drive four screens at the same time.

Still have a question?

Can my PC drive four monitors at the same time?

Count the video outputs on your graphics card. Many current cards have four, usually a mix of DisplayPort and HDMI. For laptops, the spec sheet tells you how many external monitors are supported. For more than that, you'll need a suitable docking station.

How far should I sit from four monitors?

At least 50 cm. With 27 inches and larger, sitting a little further back is more relaxed, because you can take in both rows without turning or raising your head much.

Do curved monitors work in a 2x2 grid?

Yes, as long as their weight and depth suit the mount. The 3IDEE ONE 2x2 sets take curved monitors up to 11 kg per arm, and up to 10 kg on the version with sliding heads.

Can I start with two monitors and expand later?

With a modular system like 3IDEE ONE, you simply add the missing components later instead of replacing the whole mount. We'll gladly tell you which parts you need for your ideal setup.

Layouts like this are popular too, for example in trading. Whether they work with your monitors depends on their size, their weight and the mount. Just send us your preferred layout and your monitor models.
